What is our Thriller about?

In a single our Thriller is going to be about a mysterious person that wants to find out certain facts about our hero's life and what he has been doing.

We do not know who this person is so this is what creates a sense of mystery.

We have arranged our Thriller into around 4-5 different sections.

1st:
The first section is about how it is a happy couple walking through a forest this will then lead onto the second section.

2nd:
The second section is called the kidnapping scene this will show the hero being captured and taken to a random location that is barren from civilization.

3rd:
The third section is called the torture section. This is about the hero's life and what he has done wrong in the past few years.

4th:
The fourth section is the chase scene. This is about how our hero has escaped. It is hard to explain in words but in will be a lot more detailed in the film.

5th:
The last scene will be the reveal scene this will be the big plot twist at the of the film and how everything linked.

Rough Sketch/Explanation of location and key points to not

The main palces that we will be filming is; in a forest where the kidnapping will take place, in a empty room with no detail, the next place would be in Ellese's house when we need to do a reveal scene.

Access to location via:

The access to the location will be good because we have full access to them. For example the forest we could use hanialut forest or we could also use Epping forest. Also for the empty room we can use Ellese's shed or some other dark empty room. Lastly Ellese's house because we will not have to change locations to record and it fits the approiate feel.

Name and number of location contact:

0208 227 9319 (Ellese's home numner)

Health and Safety Issues to note:

There will most likely be some power tools or sharp objects in the shed so we have to be careful if we need to move any of it out of the shed. Also at one point in the film I will have to jump out of the window and onto the shed roof to escape from the people chasing me so we just have to make sure that the weather isn't bad and wont cause any accidents.

Potential Filming Problems :

Depending on the weather we may have to re think our recording times. This is because if it is raining it cn be bad for the camera. The rain could also be good for recording because it can give a certain mood to the film. The space issue in the shed could also be a problem.

Additional Notes:  (map of area/weather forecast etc)

(Will update when we get to the days fo recording for forecast)

Style of editing

There is nothing much to the style of editing other than how the shots are actually linked together and what type of transaction is used to get form one scene to another.

This can mean is the transition clean and smooth or is it jagged and fast this can give the effect of emotions that the person is having in the film.

One style is straight cut this is where one shot will just instantly move to another. With no fade in or fade out just quick and straight to the point.

Speed of editing

The speed of editing is usually used to make the audience feel different things. For example if the audience are so feel suspense or anxiety then the scene should be quick. This means the scene can literally last for a few seconds and then change to something else so the audience are left thinking and worried for the main character.

However if the scene is to be more relaxed and slow then the scene can last for much longer times so they can show there is nothing wrong. For example this can be use din comedy films or romances. Or romantic comedies.

In some films the speed of editing is not even there. This is because the film was taken in one long take. This means the one person recording was the whole film. This needs split second timing and actors that know exactly what they need to do.

Speed of editing is also used in trailers as well. This is why they pack as much information into it as quick as possible. This is so the audience will be wondering what will happen next and what is actually going to happen in the film.

Usually in films there is a slow introduction so we can understand what is going on who people our and what we should be looking at for throughout the film. In summary it is the length and speed of shots and how much of an impact they can have on the person.

In conclusion speed of editing is used to be able to create different moods for the film. The diffrent moods can involve; Suspense, anxiety, pressure and a general sense of build up. It can also be used to create more calm atmospheres that are slower and gie information in a much briefer manner.

Synopsis:

Our thriller introduction is going to be about a couple walking through a forest when one of them our kidnapped by a random man with his face covered. Up tot his point we do not have any idea why this is happening to our hero. When he awakes from being knocked out he sees that he is in an isolated room. He is then confronted by two people shouting and interrogating him. He is still yet to understand what is going on. So at this point we see a table full of tools that would supposedly be used for torturing him but he manages to escape. This is when a slight action scene will start between our hero and the kid napper. This will break into a chase scene. Where our hero will run to his partners house and find a note or something that involves our hero doing something wrong where he is being falsely accused.

Key Genre Conventions:

The key conventions of this will be an action thriller. Also there will be a sense of mystery where we do not know what is exactly going on.

Continuity editing

Continuity editing is just simply keeping everything smooth and flowing in time. For example it would not be continuity editing if there was a bad edit in the clip. This would be if there was a cut off but you see a scene that was not supposed to be kept in the actual clip.

This can also be making sure everything is the same for different sessions. For example if on the film the person is wearing a red shirt then it says "1 hour later" then it shows the person wearing a blue shirt. This is bad because it is really logical.

An example of bad continuity editing could be in the film war of the worlds. This was when Tom cruises daughter was crouching under the table then the scene is shown again and both of the actors have moved position.

Another example could be the moment in the film Mars attacks. When the "president" does he tie and button up and looks smart. In the next scene it skips to him having his tie and button undone again so it has skipped form one thing to another. This leaves the audience thinking "Was that supposed to happen?"

Montage theory

The montage theory is mainly used when something is needed to be built up to. For example in the rocky movie he would always have a training montage before each fight. This would usually be because he knew his opponent is going to be stronger than him. So he goes through an intense workout montage this is to show his progress and strength.

In film making this is when many different shots are linked together in a short period of time. This is to take a lot of information and condense it into a small context/moment of the film. This is mainly to save time and save their budget.

This can also be used so that the story is made more intresting and the whole sequence is sped up and made much for fast paced. It can also be used to make you excited to see what happens after this montage of the person training or whatever they are doing in the montage. To see if they win some kind of competition for example.

Sound Techniques

There are different types of sound techniques two of them are diegetic and non-diegetic.

Diegetic is in the world of text and people around them can hear everything that we can hear. This can refer to if someone is mining and we can hear them hitting the stone so can the characters in the film.

Non-Diegetic this is outside of the world of text. This means only we can hear it and the people in the film cannot see it. For example in the film Jaws the music building up to the shark attack is Non-Diegetic because we can hear it but no one in the film can.

The next is on screen sound. This is when there is a sound and it is on screen so we cana ctually see the source of soiund. This could be when a dog is barking and we can see it on the screen.

Lastly is off screen sound. This is when we hear a sound but it is off screen. This could be like a train that we hear but cannot see.

These can all be mixed for example Diegetic On-screen. For example the characters can hear it as well but it is also on the screen so we can see it.

Evaluation - Preliminary Task

The story of this task was two teachers talking to each other and exchanging documents. This was simple it was more to demonstrate the techniques in the video. It was just two teachers exchanging notes to each other.

We used all of the listed techniques that were needed except the graphic match but we was told that we did not need to use it.

We used match on action by recording someone walking through the door and then the same person coming out of the door on the other side.

We used the eye-line match by recording one person looking one way and then going to the other person to record them looking around the same angle. We gave the impression that one of the people looked confused.

We used the shot reverse shot by by recording one person then recording other another person and carried on like that.

We did not break the 180 degree rule.

We did use every technique correctly and managed to edit the match on action so it looked as if they just walked through the door. We did not leave any bad edits in the recording.

By mistakes too improve we could have used a graphic match and the acting could have been more planned out throughout the recording. Next time we would make the story more planned out and it could be deeper.

Overall I think the best parts of the recording was the editing that was placed in. I was happy with this because I feel like it was continues and flowed well throughout the recording.

There are rooms for improvement throughout the whole recording. Like some of the camera angles could have been placed better and we could have implemented some of the things we have learnt previously from other tasks. Specific moments could be the match on action this could have been more fluent.

Light Sources.

There are different ways that lighting can be used.

The first way is:

To use key lighting. This is the main light and is usually the strongest this is so it can create a strong effect on the main thing it is aiming at.

The second way is:

Called BackLighting. This is to create light behind behind the person. This is so you cannot see the persons face and there will be a big shadow in front of them. This is the create a mysterious feel to the person.

The third way is:

Three point lighting. The three point lighting is used to do a light from the front the left and the right. This is so the person stands out so all light is focusing on one point. It is used in films so there are no shadows and everything in filled so you can see all of the detail.

The forth way is:

Called under lighting. This is used so that a shadow can be made on the celling. It is also used to create a slight shadow on the face of the person it is usually used to make a mysterious or scary feel.

The fifth way is:

Top lighting. This is used so that we get the light coming form above and we see a shadow on the floor that is all around. This can be used in interrogation scenes in films.

The sixth way is:

Low key lighting this is used so that not all of the light are not on. This is also creates the effect of a shadow on one half of the face.

The seventh way is:

High key lighting. This is so everything is bright and everything can be seen. There are no shadows in the shot this is because 4 lights are being used 2 from the front and 2 from the back.

Die Hard With A Vengeance Analysis

Die hard was a primary action film but also a thriller at the same time.

This story mainly involves of action scenes, fighting, explosions and guns. This is because it is an action based thriller. There are many different techniques that are used throughout this film.

The story starts of to show us Bruce Willis in a truck drunk and out of work because he has been suspended from the police force. We then get to knowing a bomb has gone of in the city and this is due to wanting revenge.

The terrorist lures out Bruce Willis by saying if he does not come out of hiding the terrorist will carry on blowing up public places if he does not come out.

Bruce Willis comes out of hiding to talk to the terrorists and find out what they really want. They tell him they want him to play along with what they are asking. He does so and complete most of the tasks. However Bruce Willis knows that he will blow up the train no matter what so he finds the bomb and throws it out of the train so no one dies when it goes off.

This was only done to actually lure him into a trap they did not actually want to kill Bruce Willis but keep him out of the way while they steal a lot of gold from a bank.

Bruce Willis then notices that it is the brother of the terrorist he had killed before. So he knows that he would be after money. He puts all of the pieces together about the subway explosion and the placement.

So because of the placement it made a hole into the bank and a perfect route for them to rob it. Bruce WIllis goes into the bank and manages to kill the fake security guards and carries onto go down into the vault to see it has been totally emptied.

He then carries onto track the bag guy he find out that he is on a big cargo boat. They go through the boat to catch him but he is caught himself. They are then sat on top of a bomb. They are told that they are going to blow up all of the gold that they stole, but because Bruce Willis knows the family and how they act he knows they are not going to blow it up and keep it for there self.

Just before the bad guy leaves he give Bruce Willis some pills. When they just escape the boat and they are getting all their injuries treated. Bruce looks on the bottom of the pills bottle and see's a location they go there and notice that they did steal the gold and are celebrating.

The last part of the film was a chase scene/ shootout. This was when the main bad guy was in the helicopter and Bruce had 2 bullets he managed to shoot some wires that fell and blew up the helicopter the bad guy was in.

The techniques that was used in this film was:
Plot twists this was because we thought that the terrorist was doing this out of pure revenge but we start to see them building up to rob the bank.

The next technique that was used was a red herring this is because we thought that Bruce Willis would be able to catch them while they are still extracting the gold form the vault but they had already stole it and managed to leave.

There was another red herring this was to blow up all of the gold that they have stolen this didn't happen because there was another plot twist that they did steal the gold just so the country and media think that they did so they became very well known people, but they really stole the gold and wanted to buy a island.
