No country for old men - Analysis

In the film No Country For Old Men we have 3 main characters.

The characters are the villain, Sheriff and the normal citizen.

We start with the normal citizen we see that he is a hunter who is chasing after dear and trying to kill them for food or to sell for money. He hits one of the dear but it leaves a blood trail from where it ran. He follows the blood and it leads him to some cars that have been left alone.

As he approaches them he sees a lot of dead bodies and investigates around the area. He then notices a lot of drugs in the back of the car.

So he would think it was a drug deal that has gone wrong. He then is able to find another man who is dead holding a briefcase full of money. He then takes the money and hides.

This is when the villain comes into the story. The villain is a hired hit man who is going to try and kill the citizen. The citizen is confused on how the hit man is finding him and following him. He then notices that there is a tracker inside the briefcase.

He disposes of the tracker but as he does this he notices that the hit man is inside the building with him. So the citizen prepares himself and sit at the door holding a modified shotgun.

This then leads to the action scene this is just them shooting at each other from different places both of them got hit once by each others guns. So after this the citizen runs away in a car and the villain kills the other man in the car with him.

After this the citizen just hides and he crosses over the border to try and get away but again this does not work and he gets tracked by the villain and the private eye/ detective and the private eye was killed by the villain.

Also the villain gave the citizen a chance to save his wife but he did not take the opportunity and ended up getting himself killed and his wife killed. He hid the money in some bushes but went back to get the briefcase and got killed while he had it.

At the end we do not know who had the money. This is because we saw mexicans running form the scene of the crime but also the lock was blasted in like how the villain always done to locks. So we do not know who killed him or who had the money. The Sheriff didn't do to much through the film but at the end was talking about his dream.

There was a MacGuffin what was all the characters cared about the money but the audience wasn't to bothered about that we just wanted to know what would happen in the end and who would die and who would actually live.

In my opinion the ending of the film was very far fetched as in it didn't make a ot of sense because there was so many loose ends that needed to be tied up.

Mis-En-Scene

Mis-En-Scene is when there are two images that are there to be compared for example if we put an image of a women looking sad then we put an image next or after that of  something like a baby crying this can be suggested that the women is either happy or some way sad.

In simple terms it is the surroundings and placement of people in the set. For example the surroundings can be as follows. Red or orange can represent a warm area where it is safe. A blue area can mean a sad or cold area. For example in a film we saw a blue area where a couple was in it and could not talk to each other what suggests it also means emotionless.

Also it can be the placement of people around the set. For example a conversation could be going on and there could be someone in the background listening in on the conversation. Usually the person would be blurred out but in this case they are not this is so you look at them more what makes them more suspicious.

Another example of this could be the lighting for example low key lighting gives a effect of mystery.

Or a color effect what is called color splash this or focus this is when you make everything in the scene a dark color but then one thing stands out the most form the others. Like in a film where someone was carrying a glass of milk but we couldn't see the mans face or what he was wearing because it was blacked out. The only strong color was the white of the milk that made us focus on the glass more and try to understand what has been done to that glass for example poison.

Source Code analysis

Source code is a film that is supposed to confuse you by using a lot of different terminology. This is used it a light term here this is because it is like the main character is a person within a person within a person. That is in a universe within a universe.

The main thing it is trying to suggest by my own opinion is that anyone is anyone. As we know the main characters name is Shaun for most of the time. He is getting sent back pointless amount of times to try and figure out how to get rid of the bomb.

He dose not want to but he carries on doing it. He quickly starts to dis agree with what is happening to him and why he is doing this.

One of the biggest plot twist that was in the film was when he finds out that he is actually dead. He was in a helicopter crash and  is missing the bottom half of his body. He discovers this and does not want to be part of this experiment anymore.

This is when we get fully introduced to the leader of this operation. The boss would not let him go this is because he is one of the only people in the world who's injuries and brain stimulation to let the machine fully work.

At this point our hero called Shaun believes he can save everyone on the train. This is because he has notice he is not going back in time but rather, going to alternate universe where the events have not yet occurred. So because of this reason he wants to save everyone on the train instead of failing and letting them die even thought he job was completed and the terrorist was caught. Noe because the job was completed there is no need to send him back into the machine. So the women who talks to him throughout the whole film called Goodwin goes against the order to wipe his memory and prepare for the next job.

She ends up sending back in the save everyone on the train. Shaun successfully does this and we still think the universe is going to end, but because he has saved it the universe carries on living with Shaun in the universe. So because he has managed to do this he is in that universe living on his life as a normal person.

Techniques that are used:

One technique is a red herring. This is because we think once he saves the train that universe is over and will not continue. However because it is a real world/ train he has saved it continues like it normally would. So this tricked us by making us think the train was still going to blow up however it does not.

Also a plot twist is used in this film. This was when we think that Goodwin will not send him back to another universe however she does.

Again another plot twist is used this was when we was told there is no possible way to send a text from another universe to someone in an alternate universe. Shaun proves this theory wrong by doing it and the text basically said. He has save all of the people on the train in every universe. So when Goodwin goes to the radio/TV it talks about a failed terrorist train bombing attack.

So the source code actually works a lot better than what the creators once thought.

Psycho analysis

Breakdown:

Psycho was a film about a women who stole 40 grand from her boss and ran away and stayed at a small motel that was not easily located. The man that owned started to gain an emotional and physical attachment to the women, because of this his "Mother" became jealous of her and killed the women. The owner of the motel did not know about the money and ended up hiding the body and the money in the trunk of a car and driving it into a swamp.

The boss of the company became suspicious as he noticed that the women who stole the money hadn't returned they begun looking for her at places like her flat. As they slowly picked up the trace the private eye that was working for the women's family got to the motel and went to ask the mother some questions he was murdered again by the "mother".

The son again cleared up the dead body.

As we got to the end of the film the women's sister and partner.  Go to the house and as the sister is searching she finds a dead body. She screams and someone runs at her with a knife. Luckily the women's partner holds the person back and we see that the mother was really the son dressed up in a wig and dressing gown.

We find out that the son actually killed his mother and her new partner. This is because he was mentally unstable from when his father died. So the son homed half of his mothers mind and sometimes the mother took over the whole of his body.

So he in the end was schizophrenic, split personalities. He was never fully his self he was either half his mother and his self. Or one hundred percent his mother.

His "mother" killed these girls because of jealousy towards them because "she" wanted it to be just him and her and no one else.

Techniques:

Some of the techniques that were used was things like:

A red herring. This is because we thought that when the sister entered the upstairs/ basement she would be killed with a knife like all of the others but it changes and we find out she is actually dead.

Another technique that was used is a plot twist. This is because we think it is actually the mother killing everyone but we find out it is the son. It again twists by telling us it is actually the mother killing them but in another way it isn't the mother killing them.

Other:

The fact that the film was so interesting was that we thought there was no way that the old sick mother could have killed anyone. So this is what made us stay and watch the film. This time the villain was not after anything in particular this is why we was so interests because why would they be killing people for no reason. Then in the end we find out that the son is a "mad man". Or mentally unstable.

In this film there is again no single hero. This is because most of the people that we thought could possibly be the hero would of got killed.

Also in the terms of the film being called psycho it relates to the son who is one. Even though it is truly his fault because it was the death of his father. Then his mother loving another man that drove him over the line of holding his self in.

The way that Hitchcock expressed this is what makes the film so unbelievable this is because we truly didn't expect that the son would be in that type of state. This is because we was sure that we heard him talking to his "Mother" but we know now that he was talking to his self.

The way that Hitchcock present a lot of these scenes leaves a big impact on the audience. This is because people in that time was so scared of how open they were while in the shower that they started taking baths instead. One of the people that was affected by this was one of the actors called "Janet Leigh". One of the surprising things that happened in this film was that a lot of people went to watch it because the actor Janet Leigh was in it, but she was killed around 20 minutes into the film so people didn't get to see much of her actually in the film.

Micro Features.

Cinematography this is simply two different things brought together.

It combines two different Greek words. One is kinema which refers to movement. The second word is graphien which means to record.

So from them two words we can understand that cinematography is the study of recording.

The study of recording is a very wide subject. This is because different types of recording are available.

For example lighting can be used it recording this gives different effects on the film. If you use low key lighting. Or under lighting this is to make it seem scary because it is casting a shadow onto the ceiling.

Sound

Sound can be used in many different ways in films. This can be for example diegetic sound. This can also be off screen but we can still have an idea where it is coming form. For example lights from a fire engine. This. This is when the sound is visible from a source on screen. Non-Digetic is completely opposite this is when we can hear a sound but the source of the sound is not visible on the screen.

The next kind of sound is called. On screen and off screen. On screen sound can be when we can hear the sound and it is on the screen. The off screen sound is where we can hear the sound but it is not on screen and we cannot see the source of the sound as well.
